Borussia Dortmund Secures Place in the 2024 Champions League Final

|

Borussia Dortmund became the first team to secure a place in the final of the Champions League. Champions League 2024 at Wembley with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain.

The win completed a 2-0 aggregate scoreline for Dortmund, who had earlier secured a narrow lead in the first match in Germany.

Hummels Stars in Encounter

Mats Hummels emerged as the hero, rising above the PSG defense to head home Julian Brandt's corner early in the second half. Dortmund's defensive prowess was on full display as they successfully contained PSG's star-studded attack, led by Kylian Mbappé.

Despite PSG's constant pressure, their efforts were thwarted time and again by the posts, with four shots hitting the post in the second half.

PSG's frustration was exacerbated by their inability to convert numerous scoring opportunities, with Gonçalo Ramos notably missing a clear-cut chance.

Referee Daniele Orsato's controversial decision to disallow a penalty in PSG's favor added further to their disappointment, instead awarding a free kick on the edge of the box.

So it is Dortmund's clinical efficiency, not Mbappé's magic, that will be present at the Champions League final in London on June 1, where they will face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.

Play by Play

The stadium erupted with energy as both teams took to the pitch, PSG fans displaying numerous banners, including one provocatively tearing up the Dortmund crest just before the players came on.

Mbappé took the opening chance with a volley in the box, only to be thwarted by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Ramos then missed from outside the box, setting the tone for PSG's night of missed chances.

However, Dortmund's confidence grew, evident when Karim Adeyemi's shot was deflected wide, followed by Julian Ryerson's near-goal in the side-netting after clever play by Niclas Fullkrug from a long throw-in.

The game witnessed a flurry of action when Mats Hummels' decisive tackle denied Mbappé an easy goal, followed immediately by Adeyemi's swift counter-attack, which forced Gianluigi Donnarumma into a brilliant save.

PSG's attempts to salvage the first half were punctuated by long-range shots from Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz, easily handled by Dortmund's resilient defense, showing its solidity in the opening phase.

Dortmund's fortunes were tested early in the second half when Zaire-Emery's effort from close range found the post, but their luck turned to crucial advantage moments later.

Mats Hummels' unmarked header from Brandt's corner extended Dortmund's lead, a simple but crucial goal that left PSG facing an uphill battle.

A frustrated PSG

In response, PSG's aggression was palpable, but ultimately futile. Ramos wasted a close chance with an errant shot over the crossbar, while Nuno Mendes' powerful shot from distance met the same fate, crashing against the post.

PSG's hopes were briefly raised when referee Daniele Orsato initially signaled for a penalty after Hummels' challenge on Ousmane Dembélé. However, a quick reversal saw Orsato award a free kick on the edge of the box, a decision confirmed by VAR.

Mbappé tried his second shot of the match, but it ended up in the side netting, and shortly after, his effort from close range was deflected onto the crossbar by Kobel.

Vitinha added to PSG's frustration with a long-range shot that bounced off the post. The night simply wasn't to be for PSG, while Dortmund continued their impressive Champions League campaign.
