Phillies Crush the Rattlers

Kyle Schwarber connected on two of the Philadelphia Phillies' three solo home runs against Merrill Kelly, and his relentless hitters pounded the Arizona Rattlers 10-0 on Tuesday night to take a 2-0 lead in the National League Championship Series. League Championship Series..

Nola Master Night

Trea Turner also connected for a home run and J.T. Realmuto had two hits and three RBIs as Philadelphia improved its playoff record to 7-1, closing in on its second consecutive World Series appearance. Aaron Nola pitched masterfully, allowing just three hits and striking out seven in six innings.

Game 3 will be Thursday at Chase Field. The Texas Watchmen also hold a 2-0 lead over the Houston Astros in the ALCS before Wednesday's game.

The night in Philadelphia was deafening as Kelly was booed after claiming that the fans at Citizens Bank Park couldn't be louder than the ones he heard cheering for Team USA at the World Baseball Classic.

And it wasn't just any game in the Classic. It was in May when Turner hit a grand slam for the U.S., taking them to the semifinals of the tournament.

Kelly, a 12-game winner this season, was booed voraciously from pregame introductions all the way to the mound. The 45,412 passionate Phillies fans, determined to rock the stadium again in October, got their way.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson said a rival manager told him last season that a playoff game in Philadelphia was "four hours of hell," and Turner ignited the crowd when he connected on a four-seam pitch to left-center field to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Phillies fans this postseason have registered up to 112 decibels, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer, which is the equivalent of standing next to a jackhammer, and Turner's home run was headed toward that mark.

Schwarber's two home runs in the third and sixth innings were Philadelphia's 14th and 15th home runs in the last four games as the Phillies continue their crushing run through October.

The Essential Key to the Phillies' Victory

Pitching remains the definitive factor. Nola, who is eligible for free agency after the World Series, has only strengthened his impending contract numbers. Nola, the longest-tenured Fili on the team, has won all three of his postseason starts and has struck out 19.

Nola pitched seven shutout innings in the Wild Card Series against Miami and struck out nine batters against the Braves in the NLDS. Against Corbin Carroll, Christian Walker and the Rattlers, Nola was again flawless.

The Phillies showed their defensive prowess to keep Arizona at bay. Bryce Harper made a diving catch on a grounder to first base that struck out Carroll in the third inning.

Alec Bohm made a diving catch at third base and fielded the throw to strike out Gabriel Moreno at second. Kelly was booed when he was relieved by Joe Mantiply in the sixth and left a runner on base.

Bryson Stott hit a single. Minutes later, Realmuto connected on a two-run double. After a pair of base on balls, Brandon Marsh added a run-producing double for a 6-0 lead.

At the time, it didn't make sense to extend Nola, not when the Phillies could save him for a later opening in the series, or possibly, his next opening against a Texas team.

The Phillies have four games with multiple solo home runs this postseason, matching the 2009 Phillies and 2002 Angels as the team with the most such games in a postseason.

Schwarber, who hit six home runs for the Phillies in last season's playoffs, has 18 in his career in the postseason. Only six players surpass him in major league history.

Schwarber kept the crowd on its feet in anticipation of his third home run in the seventh inning, but took a walk.

The Phillies defeated the Braves 10-2 in Game 3 of the National League Divisional Series, marking the second time in franchise history that they scored at least ten runs in multiple games in a single postseason.
