Latin American pitchers come to the rescue

|

Baseball talent coming out of Latin America is already recognized and established. However, the region continues to get more exposure in the sports world, with several pitchers standing out from the rest.

Mets anxious to see players return

The New York Mets team provided information on the health of two Latino pitchers who are candidates to strengthen the MLB rotation in 2023. One is Venezuelan Elieser Hernandez and the other is Colombian Jose Quintana. Both pitchers are rehabbing from injury and are close to joining the roster at some point this season.

Neither has seen any MLB action this season, but getting them back will be good news for manager Buck Showalter's rotation. As reported by Anthony DiComo, Quintana, who is recovering from rib surgery, will make his third rehab start today. In two minor league starts so far he has a 0.00 ERA with one walk and four strikeouts.

The Mets medical team has been monitoring his progress and has stated that he is moving in the right direction. Although there is still no exact date for his return to the Major Leagues, it is expected to be soon. The Colombian is known to be a reliable and experienced pitcher, and his return will be a great boost for the team.

For Hernandez, who is dealing with a right shoulder strain, he restarted a rehab assignment Sunday for Brooklyn after being shut down during his last previous one. In the 2023 minor league season, he has three starts, with an unblemished effectiveness, one base on balls and four strikeouts.

The scenario with the Venezuelan is similar, as there is still no exact date for his return to the Major League roster; however, the team is optimistic about his recovery and hopes to have him back soon.

Currently, the New York Mets are fourth in the National League East Division with a record of 35 wins and 41 wins, so getting these pitchers back could help them add wins and fight to qualify for the postseason.

Dominican pitcher sets record

Pitcher Jose de Pauda of the Dominican Republic set a new strikeout record, but not in the MLB. He has recorded the most strikeouts in the fewest number of games of any pitcher who has ever pitched in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL).

Pauda, a former San Diego Padres and New York Yankees prospect, has excelled in the Dominican League (LIDOM) and the Mexican League (LMB). Everything seems to indicate that he has found his place in the CPBL, where he has played for the past four seasons as a star pitcher and much loved by his organization, the CTBC Brothers.

Pauda had 600 strikeouts in his CBPL career in just 90 starts, becoming the fastest pitcher to reach that number in the league, surpassing Enrique Burgos' past record of 108 games in 1997. No one has now totaled or had more strikeouts in his first 90 starts than the Dominican.

In 13 starts, he has 7 wins, 3 losses, 3.59 ERA, 82.2 innings, 66 strikeouts and 16 walks this 2023. While lifetime he has 603 strikeouts with a 53-21 record plus a luxurious 2.56 ERA from a total of 597 innings pitched. He has undoubtedly been one of the best pitchers in that league.

Pauda only saw MLB action with the Yankees, with whom he made one appearance in the 2015 season. He managed two strikeouts in 3.1 innings, giving up 1 hit and 1 run. Since then, he has not returned to the MLB.
